National Autism Awareness Month 2018

What Autism Awareness Month is about, and how you can do your part and get involved.

National Autism Awareness Month 2018

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 1% of the world’s population has autism spectrum disorder or ASD, and 1 in every 68 children in America has been diagnosed with autism.

In the month of April, the spotlight is on those living with autism. National Autism Awareness Month 2018 (NAAM) provided a great opportunity to spread autism awareness and acceptance, and also for giving attention to all those who are diagnosed with autism each year. The event aimed to promote a better understanding of these people.

People from various communities have joined this event. They wear light blue-coloured shirts in acknowledgement and acceptance of people with autism. Many landmarks also participated by illuminating light blue as a sign of support for National Autism Awareness Month 2018. There were a lot of activities for the entire month of April to demonstrate support, understanding, and acceptance of people with ASD.

In April 1970, the Autism Society organized an event to advocate and spread awareness about autism. It wanted to ensure that people with ASD would have a chance to attain life equality. The event also wanted to build a society where people with ASD are truly appreciated for the unique talents that they have.

Of course, the event doesn’t simply stop at promoting autism awareness. Advocates want to go beyond that. They want to help people with autism to live life with equal opportunities like everyone else and ensure that they won’t be discriminated. Autistic advocates are encouraging everyone to join the movement for the acknowledgement, recognition, and acceptance of people with Autism.

How can you help promote Autism Awareness?

  • Join community events - There are many non-profit events hosted every National Autism Awareness Month. Walks, fun runs, donation drives, and seminars are held during April. So make sure to join!
